Biography: William J. Ledger received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1954, with his major in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958. After a rotating internship for one year in Erie, Pennsylvania, Dr. Ledger practiced obstetrics and gynecology as a General Duty Medical Officer in the Air Force. He completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Temple University in 1964 and received a Masters Degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a member of the full time academic faculty at the University of Michigan from 1964 to 1972, and the University of Southern California from 1972 to 1979. Dr. Ledger was named the Given Foundation Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cornell in 1979, when he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He held this position until September of 1999, when he became the Chairman Emeritus. Dr. Ledger is the Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Student Clerkship. He currently serves on a medical advisory board for Procter and Gamble. Dr. Ledgers research interests have focused upon infections in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition to having a practice specializing in the infectious diseases of women, Dr. Ledger has been involved with research and pharmaceutical trials relating to vulvar vestibulitis, human papilloma virus (HPV), and recurrent vulvovaginal vaginitis. He was the first obstetrician gynecologist to be elected to the Infectious Disease Society of America; he was a founder and first president of the Infectious Disease Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology in America and is the immediate past president of the International Infectious Disease Society for Obstetrics and GynecologyÑUSA. A well-respected international lecturer, Dr. William Ledger is a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American College of Surgeons, the Royal Society of Medicine, and a member of numerous professional societies. He is the author or co-author of more than two hundred forty scientific articles and textbook chapters and the sole author of two editions of Infections in the Female. The textbook, Vulvovaginal Infections, co-authored with Steven S. Witkin, Ph.D., the first William J. Ledger, M.D. Distinguished Professor for Infection and Immunology in Obstetrics and Gynecology, was published by Manson in March of 2007. A second edition is being prepared.
