Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor are the 2 most common movement disorders encountered in clinical practice. Both are chronic and slowly progressive conditions that can cause functional impairment and disability. The incidence and prevalence of both conditions is projected to increase significantly in the next 20 years as is the economic burden on our healthcare system. Knowledge of highest risk demographic groups, available current treatments, efficacy and limitation or medical treatment and appropriate candidates for surgical therapies is needed to adequately treat patients with these conditions.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Understand the increasing burden of Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s disease and which demographic groups are most at risk.
- Clinically recognize the spectrum of symptoms in patients with Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s disease.
- Know current available medical treatments for ET and PD and understand their limitations
- Know available surgical options for ET and PD and which patients are good candidates for referral.
