Transfusing Wisely: Best Practices
December 18, 2025FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Treatment and Management of Patients with Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders
What is the problem?
It is estimated that approximately 17.3% of the US population aged 12 and older has a substance use disorder. The numbers are highest among young adults aged 18-25. While substance use disorders are a very common condition encountered in inpatient settings, many physicians are not prepared to diagnose and treat these disorders. There is a range of FDA-approved pharmacotherapies available for substance use disorder, and recent regulatory reform has removed significant hurdles. It is important for healthcare professionals to learn about initiation and titration guidelines for buprenorphine and methadone maintenance treatment.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Examine the epidemiology of substance use disorders
- Manage substance use disorders by employing best practices in addiction pharmacotherapy
- Integrate recent regulatory reform guidelines into hospital-based assessment and management of opioid use disorder
