January 21, 2026FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Acute Myocardial Infarction
What is the problem?
Acute myocardial infarction (Acute MI) is a common and potentially fatal cardiac presentation. It is estimated that approximately 805,000 people in the United States have a heart attack each year. Acute MI remains a major driver of hospital readmissions, morbidity, and mortality. Proper MI education helps clinicians identify high-risk patients, optimize discharge planning, and ensure appropriate follow-up. Because a significant portion of readmissions are due to cardiac complications within the first few weeks after discharge, and readmissions substantially increase healthcare costs, improved MI care and post-discharge management can reduce rehospitalizations, improve patient survival, and alleviate the burden on the healthcare system. Family physicians, as well as cardiologists, have a vital role in the management of acute MI and need to be aware of the current guidelines to implement in practice.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Discuss the pathophysiology, incidence/prevalence, and mortality/morbidity associated with acute myocardial infarction, along with the cultural diversity range of persons typically affected
- Cite the long-term benefits of various medications
- Identify the common and uncommon signs and symptoms in AMIs
- Compare and contrast non-invasive medical management and invasive management
