FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: The Use of Psychedelics for Palliative Care

What is the problem?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is emerging as a promising intervention in palliative care for addressing end-of-life existential distress. Research suggests that it may alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and demoralization in patients facing serious or terminal illness. Although classic psychedelics remain classified as Schedule I controlled substances, the FDA allows limited access through its Expanded Access Program for certain patients with terminal conditions. Healthcare professionals should be familiar with the potential role of psychedelic-assisted therapy, available access pathways, and appropriate referral considerations to psychiatrists or other qualified specialists.

Review the history and clinical ﬁndings from psychedelic research to relieve the psychological and existential suffering associated with a life-threatening illness or at the end of life
