Dietary Sugars: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
October 31, 2024FEATURED Medical education topic: Antimicrobial resistance
Antimicrobial resistance is a growing public health threat worldwide. In the United States, more than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result. Prevention and infection control efforts in the U.S. reduced deaths from antimicrobial-resistant infections significantly prior to 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in more resistant infections, increased antibiotic use and less prevention actions, losing some of this progress. CDC data published in July 2024 shows that the prevalence of six bacterial antimicrobial-resistant hospital-onset infections remains above pre-pandemic levels, including MRSA, VRE, and CRE. Good hygiene and judicial use of antibiotics can help combat antimicrobial resistance, and healthcare professionals should be aware of how to best contribute toward this solution.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Describe the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance
- Recognize major contributing factors to antimicrobial resistance
- Identify possible solutions to antimicrobial resistance
- Explain the predicted impacts of antimicrobial resistance for patients, physicians, and policymakers
