About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer throughout their lifetime. In 2024, an estimated 310,720 new invasive breast cancer diagnosis cases are expected in women in the U.S. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for other cancers besides lung cancer. In 2021, according to the World Health Organization, breast cancer became the most common cancer globally. Physicians should understand the latest guidelines and treatment options available to patients to answer their questions and coordinate care with specialists adequately.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Assess risk factors that may contribute to breast cancer increases, such as hormone replacement therapy, genetics, etc.
- Examine the pathophysiology and epidemiology of breast cancer and identify prognostic indicators
- Follow AJCC clinical and pathologic TNM staging guidelines and choose appropriate evidence-based treatment and management (surgical and nonsurgical) options
- Summarize current and future research studies and clinical trials
