It is estimated that in 2025, about 22,000 new cases of esophageal cancer will be diagnosed, and about 16,250 will die from esophageal cancer in the United States. Esophageal cancer is more common in men than in women, and risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, GERD and Barrett’s esophagus. Proper diagnosis and treatment of GERD and Barrett’s esophagus can help reduce the risk of these patients developing esophageal cancer.

- Identify the criteria for staging the disease
