January 11, 2026FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Glaucoma
What is the problem?
Glaucoma, known as “the silent thief of sight,” is a group of eye conditions that cause gradual damage to the optic nerve. It typically involves increased eye pressure and results in the loss of peripheral vision, eventually affecting central vision if not treated. In 2022, about 4.2 million people in the United States were affected by glaucoma. High-risk groups include individuals with a family history of the disease, African Americans over age 40, and anyone over age 60. Primary care providers play a key role in early detection and referring patients to ophthalmologists for specialized care.
