October 21, 2024FEATURED Medical education topic: Liver cancer
The incidence of liver cancer has more than tripled since 1980. About 41,630 new cases will be diagnosed in 2024, and about 29,840 people will die of this cancer. Primary liver cancer starts in the liver, and secondary liver cancer starts elsewhere in the body and spreads to the liver. Risk factors for primary liver cancer include having hepatitis B or C, heavy alcohol use, cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, obesity, or diabetes. There are different types of treatment for patients with primary liver cancer, and healthcare professionals need to know about new and current treatment regimens, as well as when to refer.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Review risk factors and symptoms for liver cancer
- Utilize liver biopsies and bone scans to diagnose liver cancer early
- Identify the physical aspects of cancer and recognize that liver cancer may not be the primary disease patients are dealing with
- Follow evidence-based guidelines to appropriately choose the best treatment protocols and interventions for liver cancer patients
- Recognize patient populations at higher risk for liver cancer
