What is the problem?

Malnutrition occurs when the body does not receive adequate nutrients or when calorie intake is excessive without sufficient nutritional balance. It is a widespread but frequently underrecognized condition, affecting up to 50% of hospitalized adults at the time of admission. Despite its prevalence, only about 5% of these patients receive a formal diagnosis during their hospital stay.

Although malnutrition can affect individuals of any age, older adults are particularly vulnerable, with prevalence rates approaching 30% among adults over 80 years of age. Malnutrition is associated with significant adverse outcomes, including physical decline, increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and higher mortality. In recent years, the diagnostic criteria for malnutrition have evolved, making it essential for healthcare providers to stay current with evidence-based guidelines. Another emerging population at increased risk includes individuals using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). Studies have shown that GLP-1 users have a 158% higher risk of developing a new nutritional deficiency or receiving a diagnosis of protein-calorie malnutrition compared with matched non-users. Given the high prevalence and serious consequences of malnutrition, physicians must be able to recognize patients who meet diagnostic criteria and distinguish between mild, moderate, and severe malnutrition. Accurate identification and timely diagnosis are critical to ensuring appropriate nutritional interventions and improving patient outcomes.
