The United States is experiencing a rapid increase in congenital syphilis, with associated fetal death, infant death and morbidity. Congenital syphilis also disproportionately affects minority and under-resourced populations. It is estimated that more than 3,700 babies were born with syphilis in 2022, which is more than 10 times the number in 2012. Gaps in the healthcare system are contributing to these adverse outcomes. Implementation of CDC testing and treatment guidelines could reduce the adverse outcomes associated with congenital syphilis.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Diagnose and manage maternal syphilis
- Perform system modification necessary to prevent congenital syphilis
- Counsel patients on the importance of syphilis screening and how to preventtransmission
