What is the problem?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder involving genetic, hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive factors, and it affects millions of women in the United States. It is estimated to affect 10–15% of women of reproductive age, and up to half of those with PCOS may remain undiagnosed. PCOS is a leading cause of infertility and is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers, including endometrial, ovarian, and breast cancer. Notably, women with PCOS are about three times more likely to have metabolic syndrome compared with those without PCOS. At present, there is no single drug approved specifically to treat PCOS; management focuses on addressing symptoms and associated health risks through lifestyle modification and individualized therapies.
