June 15, 2024trending Medical education topic: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is caused when the tiny arteries in the lung become thick and narrow, resulting in the heart working harder and less effectively to pump blood throughout the body. 500-1000 new cases of PAH are diagnosed in the United States each year. It is most common in women aged 30-60 and disproportionally affects African American and Hispanic women. Treatments are available to help control symptoms and improve quality of life. Recently, the FDA approved several new medications for pulmonary arterial hypertension, so it is important for healthcare professionals to know about current available options for patients with this disease.
