What is the problem?
Physician burnout is marked by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Physicians routinely navigate demanding clinical responsibilities while striving to provide high-quality care and sustain high stress, often compounded by heavy workloads and administrative burden, which can contribute to burnout. Surveys indicate that nearly 42% of physicians in the United States report experiencing at least one symptom of burnout, a rate that has declined for several consecutive years but remains higher than that of the general U.S. workforce. Physicians practicing emergency medicine, urological surgery, hematology/oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, and family medicine face particularly high levels of occupational stress. Burnout and fatigue not only affect physicians’ personal well-being but can also negatively impact patient care and the broader health care system. Evidence suggests that educational interventions can play a meaningful role in prevention: a recent study of a participatory wellness continuing medical education program demonstrated significant reductions in physician burnout and stress at 26-week follow-up, and meta-analytic data confirm that both individual-focused educational strategies and organizational interventions produce clinically meaningful reductions in burnout. Practicing self-care and utilizing available wellness resources can help physicians manage stress and support their overall well-being.
Proposed Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Define and describe burnout and resilience among physicians
- Identify “red flags” that may indicate when a physician or colleague is at higher risk for burnout
- Implement methods to control and manage stress while treating patients and interacting with team members
- Prevent or manage physician stress and related disruption and impairment
- Utilize available resources when needed
- Recognize the varying levels of stress and burnout among different sub-specialties
