What is the problem?
Stroke remains a leading cause of death in the United States, affecting more than 795,000 Americans each year. The risk of stroke varies by gender, race, and ethnicity, and is influenced by several modifiable risk factors, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and tobacco use. In January 2026, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association released updated guidelines for the early management of acute ischemic stroke. These guidelines provide a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for care, spanning prehospital evaluation, acute treatment, early in-hospital management of complications, and the initiation of secondary prevention strategies.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Select among primary treatment options for acute ischemic stroke
- Apply current time windows for thrombolytic and thrombectomy eligibility
- Evaluate the role of anticoagulation in stroke prevention
- Identify indications for surgical and endovascular intervention in acute ischemic stroke
