September 30, 2026TRENDING MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Sudden Cardiac Death
What is the problem?
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a primary component of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States, causing over 350,000 to 700,000 deaths annually. It accounts for roughly 10%–15% of all annual deaths and nearly half of all cardiovascular-related mortality. SCD is an unexpected death occurring within an hour of symptom onset, often due to ventricular fibrillation, stemming from underlying coronary artery disease or a previous heart attack. Key risk factors include advanced age, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and genetics. While heart disease is listed as the top cause, some studies suggest that sudden cardiac arrest might be overrepresented or misclassified on death certificates, sometimes causing confusion between the underlying disease (e.g., atherosclerosis) and the mechanism of death (e.g., cardiac arrest).
Proposed Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Define the modern epidemiology of sudden cardiac death based on autopsy and how it differs from historical paradigms based on presumed cardiac cause of sudden death.
- Describe common non-cardiac causes of sudden death
- Describe differences between sudden cardiac arrest survivors and sudden cardiac death victims
- Describe racial and sex differences in sudden cardiac death
