What is the problem?
Communication issues continue to contribute to patient harm on a regular basis, and safety culture problems are a major problem. Lapses in teamwork skills are a leading cause of sentinel events and lead to death and suffering, at inflated costs. It is important for all members of a healthcare team to have strategies to communicate effectively and act professionally, in order to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes, as well as reduce the cost of care, and provider stress and burnout.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, nurses, and other staff members to promote a healthy teamwork environment
- Act professionally in the midst of stress
- Apply appropriate skills to cope with stress and manage stress-related factors
- Recognize how gender, position, ethnicity, and/or cultural differences can cause misunderstandings
