What is the problem?
Recent epidemiological data demonstrate that the incidence of several cancers is increasing among young adults, including colorectal, breast, kidney, pancreas, and uterine cancers. Knowing this information has significant implications for early detection, diagnostic vigilance, and public health planning. These trends are seen across multiple countries and are not solely attributable to increased screening in the United States. It is important for healthcare professionals to pay attention to the patients’ signs and symptoms, keep cancer in their differential diagnosis, and consider evaluation for cancer earlier than previously. In addition, it is important to incorporate family history, genetic predisposition, and risk factors as they decide the timing of screening for cancer.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Identify which tumors are on the rise for the AYA cohort ages 18-39 (adolescents and young adults)
- Describe the current theory that explains this trend and what steps can be taken to identify at-risk individuals.
- List the changes in cancer screening and surveillance that might help reverse this trend
- Outline the treatment options for these tumors and the outcomes that impact life expectancy
