April 22, 2024trending topic: Update on Cholesterol and Hypertension
There is a strong link between high cholesterol and high blood pressure. When the arteries become hardened and narrowed with cholesterol plaque and calcium, the heart has to strain much harder to pump blood through them. As a result, blood pressure becomes abnormally high. High blood pressure and cholesterol are two main reasons people have heart disease. They are both common, deadly, and preventable. Only about 1 in 4 of adults with hypertension have their blood pressure under control. More than 40% of adults in the United States are unaware and therefore untreated for high cholesterol. New guidelines for the treatment of high cholesterol were released in 2018, and for high blood pressure in 2017, by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the current guidelines and issues relating to the specific use and selection of cholesterol-lowering medications and who to use them on.
