March 25, 2026FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Allergy and Asthma Update
What is the problem?
Over 28 million people in the United States have asthma, and approximately 31% of adults have a diagnosed seasonal allergy, food allergy, or eczema. Asthma, allergy, and anaphylaxis are commonly managed in primary care, yet evolving guidelines have created gaps between evidence and practice. This activity provides practical updates on anaphylaxis management, GINA asthma recommendations (including MART therapy), atopic march progression, and early food allergen introduction. Emphasis is placed on applying guideline-based care across outpatient, ED, and inpatient settings while addressing real-world factors such as food insecurity that impact patient adherence and outcomes.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Describe why an Anti-Inflammatory Reliever (“AIR”) is preferred over short-acting beta2-agonists (SABA) as reliever therapy per GINA 2025 guidelines
- Recognize and appropriately manage anaphylaxis, including the use of intranasal epinephrine
- Review clinically relevant updates from the most recent anaphylaxis practice parameters, including recommended outpatient, ED, and inpatient guidance
