June 6, 2025TRENDING MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: ACTIVE SHOOTER
June is Gun Violence Awareness Month.
One of our highly rated speakers recently shared a harrowing experience—one no parent ever wants to face.
On April 17, 2025, while at Florida State University, his daughter sent him a chilling text message:
“There is a shooter on campus… I’m scared.”
Moments later, another message followed:
“It’s in the next building.”
Her classroom was just 150–200 feet away from the shooter, windows directly facing the other building.
150 feet. 150 little feet.
While he may not be prepared to speak publicly about that day and what he has learned, we want to share that we do have faculty who can present a CME-accredited lecture for physicians and staff and can cover the following learning objectives:
- Identify safety and survival strategies specific to their institution during an active shooter event
- Assess both effective and ineffective responses to active shooter incidents
- Initiate the development of institutional policies, procedures, and training to enhance preparedness and response
Active shooter incidents are rising across the United States, with recent FBI statistics reporting the highest two-year average ever recorded. Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable: 60% of all workplace assaults occur in healthcare settings. Between 2000 and 2014, hospital-based shootings in the U.S. steadily increased, underscoring a dangerous and evolving threat.
Active shooter incidents are unpredictable and can escalate rapidly. During the chaos, anyone—regardless of role—can play a vital part in minimizing harm. Hospitals must proactively develop plans, policies, and training protocols to respond effectively to such events.
