The Gut Microbiome: Its Role in Health and How to Keep it Healthy
The role of the gut-brain-microbiome-diet axis is revolutionizing our understanding of health and disease. It is now recognized that many GI and non-GI diseases are at least partly due to dysbiosis in the gut microbiota. Research shows that early life factors including maternal microbiota, antibiotic exposure, nutrition, and environmental exposures can impact colonization and maturation of gut microbiota. The entire field has made tremendous strides with the advent of new technology to identify the human gut microbiome’s composition. New diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are under development. Healthcare professionals need to know how probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, pharmaceuticals, exercise, epigenetic factors, and more can influence health and disease.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Discuss the gut microbiome: how it develops and its role in human development and health
- Describe what is causing changes in our microbiome and how can we have a healthier microbiome
- Review microbiome contributions to GI and non-GI diseases (a whirlwind tour)
- Evaluate how to harness the microbiome for health: what might the future hold
