What is the problem?
Brain and other nervous system cancer is the 10th leading cause of death for men and women. In 2023, an estimated 24,810 adults in the United States will be diagnosed with malignant primary brain and spinal cord tumors. Primary brain tumors begin in the brain and tend to stay in the brain. Even benign tumors can cause damage by growing and spreading into nearby areas, where they can destroy normal brain tissue. Unless completely removed or destroyed, most brain or spinal cord tumors will continue growing and eventually become life-threatening. Recent advances in brain tumor diagnosis and treatment include tests for changes in genes, proteins, and chromosomes inside brain tumor cells and newer techniques in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Physicians should be able to choose appropriate tests to diagnose brain tumors and refer to a specialist promptly.
