December 23, 2024TRENDING Medical education topic: Community Acquired Pneumonia
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the most common infectious diseases and is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. CAP results in approximately 1.4 million ER visits and 41,000 deaths annually in the United States. CAP is usually acquired via inhalation or aspiration of pulmonary pathogenic organisms into a lung segment or lobe. As the flu and respiratory virus infection season worsens, it is important for CAP patients also to be tested for influenza and COVID-19. With treatment, most patients improve rapidly within 2 weeks. CAP morbidity and mortality are highest in elderly patients and in immunocompromised hosts. Healthcare providers need to know current treatment guidelines for CAP patients, considering the disease severity and individual patient risk.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Cite the risk factors and prevalence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP)
- Diagnose appropriately, identify the severity of illness, and determine admission necessity
- Appropriately prescribe antibiotics for CAP patients in both the outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Describe the relationship between processes of care and outcomes for patients with CAP.
- Review the racial and ethnic differences in CAP
