Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs, and a strong urge to move them, more frequently during the evening or when someone is resting. RLS can begin at any age, and is thought to affect approximately 7-10% of the U.S. population. There is no cure for RLS, but there are treatments available for some symptoms, as well as some lifestyle changes that may provide relief. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recently developed a new clinical practice guideline, updating the recommendations for treating RLS. Restless Legs Syndrome can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life, therefore it is important for healthcare providers to be able to diagnose timely and manage symptoms.
