Cushing Syndrome & Subclinical Cushing Syndrome: Pearls and Pitfalls
March 12, 2025FEATURED Medical education topic: Current and Future Treatments for Autoimmune Diseases
It is estimated that approximately 8% of the United States population is living with an autoimmune disease, of which nearly 80% are women. There are over 140 chronic and often debilitating autoimmune diseases. The innate immune system plays increasingly vital roles in both infection and autoimmune diseases. Rapid advances have been made in the understanding of autoimmune diseases and their management, and it is important for healthcare providers to know about current guidelines, as well as new medications and strategies that are being developed.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Understand the normal and abnormal autoimmune response: recognize the functions of the innate and adaptive immune response and how it functions in response to infections like COVID-19 and autoimmune diseases
- Identify the way drugs that suppress specific pathways of the immune response are selected and developed and which drugs work for which autoimmune disease
- Differentiate autoinflammatory from autoimmune diseases and effectively treat these diseases
- Choose appropriate conventional treatments such as corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory drugs
- Describe how biologic targeted treatments work and why such agents are used
- Evaluate future developments in treating autoimmune diseases
