Alternative Methods for Pain Management
March 28, 2025FEATURED Medical education topic: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms within the deep veins, commonly in the lower limbs. DVT is part of the venous thromboembolic (VTE) disorders, representing the third most common cause of death from cardiovascular disorders after heart attacks and stroke. DVT accounts for most cases of pulmonary embolism. DVT-associated pulmonary embolism causes an estimated 300,000 deaths per year in the United States. Morbidity can be reduced through early diagnosis and treatment. It is important to know the role of the interprofessional team in evaluating, diagnosing, and managing this condition.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Describe screening mechanisms for DVT prophylaxis for medical patients
- Emphasize benefits vs risks of DVT prophylaxis for medical patients
- Identify and choose the most appropriate prophylaxis for patients or properly document why DVT prophylaxis was not prescribed
- Explain and apply VTE protocols
- Outline any variations in epidemiology, diagnosis or treatment by age, gender, ethnicity, language, culture or socioeconomic factors
