TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEART
February 14, 2025FEATURED Medical education topic: Epilepsy
In the United States, there are about 3.4 million people with epilepsy: 2.9 million adults and 456,000 children. Once epilepsy is diagnosed, it is crucial to begin treatment as soon as possible. Most seizures are controlled with modern medicines and surgical techniques. Physicians should be aware of the advancements in epilepsy treatment, including nasal sprays, cannabis, and neuromodulatory devices. It is not uncommon for people with epilepsy, especially children, to develop behavioral and emotional problems in conjunction with seizures. Controlling seizures is most crucial, but preventing and treating these additional health problems is also essential because they can shorten lifespan and increase health costs.

- Utilize the current screening mechanisms used for diagnosis
- Evaluate the benefits and complications of medical and surgical treatment options
- Manage appropriately
- Cite cultural and technology issues and how they impact the care of the epileptic patient
