May 9, 2025FEATURED Medical education topic: FOOD ALLERGIES
Food allergy is a costly, potentially life-threatening health condition that can adversely affect a patient’s wellbeing. More than 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions, but the most common food allergies include shellfish, milk, peanut, tree nut, and finfish. It is estimated that 1 in 13 children and 1 in 10 adults have food allergies. About 40% of children with food allergies are allergic to more than one food, and more than 40% of children with food allergies have experienced a severe allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis. It is crucial for physicians to be able to diagnose, identify, and apply the treatment options currently available for individuals with food allergies.
