The average age of menopause in women in the United States is 52. The most common symptoms associated with menopause are vasomotor symptoms, including hot flushes, and vaginal symptoms. Vasomotor symptoms, which occur in as many as 80% of US women who go through natural menopause, can be especially troubling. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has provided recommendations for the treatment of vasomotor and vaginal symptoms related to menopause that physicians should be up to date. Decision making about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has increased in complexity, and physicians need the most up-to-date information to confidently discuss the options, risks, and benefits of HRT with their patients.
