February 7, 2026FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Influenza Update
What is the problem?
Most U.S. states have reported “high” or “very high” influenza activity levels in recent weeks. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that infects the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs and can cause mild to severe illnesses. Those at higher risk of serious complications are adults 65 and older, children under 2, and people of any age with certain medical conditions (such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes). CDC data show that flu cases are surging and rates will likely continue to increase due to lower vaccination rates and a partial vaccine mismatch. It is important for healthcare providers to know the evidence-based guidelines for influenza treatment, as well as improve communication strategies to help increase influenza vaccination rates.
