What is the problem?
Many who become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and develop COVID-19 recover within a few weeks after symptoms first appear. However, research has shown that Post-COVID-19 conditions (“Long COVID”) affect some patients. Post-COVID refers to a wide range of physical and mental health consequences present for weeks or months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. More than 200 symptoms have been identified that affect multiple organ symptoms. A recent study of nearly 10,000 Americans has identified 12 symptoms that seem most prevalent, including post-exertional malaise, fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, heart palpitations, issues with sexual desire or capacity, loss of smell or taste, thirst, chronic cough, chest pain, and abnormal movements. Long COVID is more prevalent in people who have severe COVID-19 illness, although anyone can experience it. While data is varied, the incidence is estimated at 10-30% of non-hospitalized cases and 50-70% of hospitalized cases. Patients often report feeling unsupported by medical professionals and that their ongoing symptoms are dismissed. Most post-COVID conditions can be diagnosed and treated by primary care physicians, and healthcare professionals need to listen to and validate patients’ experiences. Where available, referral to a multidisciplinary post-COVID care center for additional care concerns can also be considered.
