What is the problem?
Marijuana is one of the most widely used and controversial substances worldwide. While there is value in medical marijuana for pain control, rheumatoid disorders, and neurological disorders, cannabis can also cause psychosis and impaired social or occupational functioning and can create safety risks for the families of users. Recent research indicates that 30% of marijuana users have marijuana use disorder. For some users, long term or frequent marijuana use has been linked to increased risk of schizophrenia or psychosis. To provide adequate counseling, physicians must understand the patient’s patterns of use, including the type, dose, and delivery method of the cannabis product. Since the science of cannabis is generally not part of today’s medical training, here, healthcare professionals may have an ‘education gap’ on the science behind cannabis and its implications for patient’s health.
