What is the problem?
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, around 53,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in the United States alone, with tobacco and alcohol use being the major risk factors. Additionally, HPV infections of the mouth and throat have become a growing concern as the number of oral cancers linked to HPV has risen dramatically over the past few decades. Notably, oral cancer affects more than twice as many men as women. Early detection of oral cancer significantly increases the chances of a successful cure, underscoring the importance of physicians knowing how to detect early signs of cancer.
