May 1, 2025TRENDING WELLNESS TOPICS: Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is responsible for two million broken bones and $19 billion in related costs every year. About 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass, which increases their risk of fractures. Osteoporosis affects women and men of all races, but white and Asian women, especially postmenopausal women, are at the highest risk. Since there are no visible external signs of osteoporosis, it can be challenging for physicians to identify high-risk patients. Screening for osteoporosis is recommended in women 65 years or older and younger women with higher fracture risk. Screening rates are much lower when patients do not have access to preventative medicine, so all physicians should be aware of the disease, management strategies, and the effects on other health conditions.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Identify which patients should be screened for osteoporosis
- Analyze diagnostic studies for osteoporosis
- Develop a treatment plan for patients diagnosed with osteoporosis
