Following the Covid-19 pandemic, physician burnout has been pushed to an all-time high. It has been estimated that approximately 63% of physicians had at least one manifestation of burnout in 2021, compared to 38% in 2020.
Physician stress and burnout affect performance, mental and physical health. This can also affect physician’s workplaces and personal lives. Sometimes this burnout and stress results in anger and inappropriate behavior among staff, and other times it can lead to more serious and dire consequences like suicide.
Physicians often lack effective skills to prevent or recognize these signs of burnout, as well as how to cope with stress and manage stress related factors. Two strategies to help prevent burnout and manage these stress levels include practicing mindfulness and improving physical health.
It is important for physicians to have coping and management skills to prevent or reduce the impairments affecting patient care, and learn how to enhance their personal well-being and patient outcomes.
Here are a few important learning objectives to better identify Physicians’ Wellness:
- List the challenges to physician wellbeing
- Identify organizational level strategies to boost wellbeing
