What is the problem?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to increase. About 1 in 5 people in the United States have a sexually transmitted infection; almost half of the new cases are among youth ages 15-24. Many STDs, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia, are curable with antibiotics, yet most cases go undiagnosed and untreated, leading to severe adverse health effects. There are continued concerns about antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea, eventually wearing down the last highly effective antibiotic. In 2021, updated treatment guidelines were introduced to replace the 2015 guidance. It is important for healthcare professionals to know these guidelines and be able to diagnose and treat patients with sexually transmitted diseases efficiently.
Learning Objectives
1. Follow current screening and testing recommendations for common sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
2. Employ preventive mechanisms for STIs, including HPV vaccine guidelines
3. Utilize the current and most effective treatment protocols available and CDC standards
4. Improve communication efforts between physicians and patients for STI prevention, especially with high-risk groups
