August 20, 2024FEATURED Medical education topic: stroke mimics
A stroke is a medical emergency with effective acute treatment protocols. However, the differential diagnosis of stroke is wide, and more than a dozen medical entities other than stroke frequently masquerade as a stroke. In the acute stroke setting, about one-third of the conditions presenting as stroke are stroke mimic syndromes. If the diagnosis is wrong, then the emergency treatment will not only be irrelevant, but important other conditions will go untreated. Healthcare professionals need to know what stroke mimics they may encounter as well as stroke chameleons (conditions that appear not to be a stroke, but they are).
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Diagnose the currently known range of stroke mimics accurately
- Examine the possibility of potentially confounding diagnoses such as stroke chameleons
- Incorporate contemporary clinical, laboratory, and neuroimaging tools to refine the stroke workup
