August 26, 2024FEATURED Medical education topic: Physician communication
Interpersonal communications are vital to maximizing patient outcomes. Medical practitioners must interact with patients, family members, office staff, hospital personnel, and colleagues; each interaction may impact patient care. Good clinician-patient interactions facilitate comprehension of medical information and allow for better identification of patients’ needs, perceptions, and expectations. At times, however, these communications may be challenging. Breakdowns in communication and disagreements with colleagues, patients, and their families, or other medical personnel may negatively impact patient care. This lecture discusses the nonverbal and verbal communication between practitioners, patients and families, colleagues, and other medical personnel and how best to communicate in difficult situations.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Discuss how to detect and decipher the nonverbal cues from patients and their family members to maximize communication
- List at least two techniques to defuse a potentially volatile patient interaction
- Explain how to reword phrases to facilitate communication between individuals
