What is the problem?
About one-third of the U.S. population reports not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. Sleep deprivation is linked to a wide range of adverse outcomes, including injuries, chronic disease, mental health disorders, behavioral issues, reduced quality of life, impaired driving, motor vehicle accidents, higher healthcare costs, and decreased workplace productivity. It also plays a significant role in the development of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and depression. Because sleep-related concerns are so prevalent, physicians across all specialties must be equipped to recognize, evaluate, and manage common sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, in patients of all ages.
Proposed Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- Describe common sleep disturbances seen in primary care practice
- Develop strategies for the diagnosis of patients with sleep disorders, focusing on insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, REM, NREM parasomnias, and restless legs syndrome
- Explain current treatment options for sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome
- Formulate and apply a practical approach for diagnosing and managing common sleep disorders such as insomnia, hypersomnia, and abnormal motor activity during sleep
