March 12, 2026FEATURED MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: Type II Diabetes Update
What is the problem?
The prevalence of obesity and diabetes is increasing across the United States, particularly in the southern regions. It is estimated that 40.1 million people have diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes, and 115.2 million have prediabetes. Type II Diabetes is often preventable. Eating well, staying physically active, keeping a healthy weight, and not using tobacco can help prevent or postpone Type II diabetes. Diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation. Early diagnosis is important to prevent the worst effects of type 2 diabetes. Primary care providers are often the first medical professionals to discover a patient’s diabetes. Staying up to date on current diabetes diagnosis and treatment guidelines, as well as recognizing high-risk patients, is essential for healthcare professionals.
