Obesity is a common, serious, and costly disease.
In the United States, the obesity prevalence is approximately 42%, and the severe obesity prevalence is 9.2%.
Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. Many physicians do not address weight issues with their patients, despite clinical guidelines encouraging clinicians to identify and counsel obese and overweight patients.
Physicians need to have comprehensive knowledge of the benefits of weight loss and counsel patients effectively to help patients implement strategies to produce long-term health-oriented motivation and habit patterns to lose weight and maintain their weight loss successfully.
Here are a few important learning objectives to better understand weight loss, nutrition, obesity and bariatric surgery:
- Counsel overweight and obese patients in an outpatient office setting by offering effective counseling along with options for medication and surgical options (if appropriate)
- Examine metabolic risk factors commonly seen in obese patients and appropriate monitoring of these comorbidities in the treatment of obesity
- Utilize established algorithms to optimize weight loss by combining diet and exercise with medication and/or surgical options
