Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and lethal disease. Approximately 147,950 new cases of large bowel cancer are diagnosed annually in the United States, including approximately 104,610 colon and 43,340 rectal cancers. About 53,200 Americans are expected to die of large bowel cancer each year. Although CRC mortality has been progressively declining since 1990, at a current rate of approximately 1.6 to 2.0 percent per year, it remains the third most common cause of cancer death in the U.S. in women and the second leading cause of death in men. Around 12%, or 18,000 cases, will be found in people under 50. Because of this, just three years ago, the ACS amended its colon cancer guidelines to recommend beginning screening at age 45 instead of age 50 for those of average risk. Physicians should be using current diagnosis, treatment (surgical and non-surgical), and management tools and techniques for colorectal cancer patients.
Here are a few important learning objectives regarding Colorectal Cancer:
- 1. Examine the epidemiology and risk factors regarding colon cancer
- 2. Diagnose and clinically stage colon cancer in the primary care setting
- 3. Utilize chemotherapy drugs in the adjuvant and metastatic setting of colon cancer
- 4. Apply new research and developments in colon cancer for screening and treatment
- 5. Recognize the different clinical, socioeconomic, health literacy, language, and communication factors that impact patients from getting the care that is needed
