What is the problem?
Obesity is a common, serious, and costly disease. In the United States, the obesity prevalence is approximately 42%, and the severe obesity prevalence is 9.2%. Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. The treatment of obesity is evolving as a new class of medications- GLP1 analogues- have been approved for the treatment of obesity. Their efficacy has led to widespread use necessitating a greater understanding of indications, contraindications, use and adverse effects. Understanding the evidence-based use of these medications is critical to treating patients with obesity.
