Featured Medical education topic: New Guidelines for Colon Cancer Screening & Management
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and lethal disease. It is estimated that in 2023, 153,020 adults in the United States would be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. About 52,550 Americans were expected to die of colorectal cancer in 2023. Although CRC mortality has been progressively declining since 1990, at a current rate of approximately 1.6 to 2.0 percent per year, it remains the third most common cause of cancer death in the U.S. in women and the second leading cause of death in men. Around 12%, or 18,000 cases, will be found in people under 50. Because of this, several years ago the ACS amended its colon cancer guidelines to recommend beginning screening at age 45 instead of age 50 for those of average risk. Physicians should be using current diagnosis, treatment (surgical and non-surgical), and management tools and techniques for colorectal cancer patients.

- 2. Diagnose and clinically stage colon cancer in the primary care setting
- 3. Utilize chemotherapy drugs in the adjuvant and metastatic setting of colon cancer

- 5. Recognize the different clinical, socioeconomic, health literacy, language, and communication factors that impact patients from getting the care that is needed
