July 18, 2023TRENDING WELLNESS TOPIC: Radiation Safety
What is the problem?
Radiation is energy that comes from a source, travels through space at the speed of light, and has wavelike properties. Electromagnetic waves are everywhere, from radios, microwaves, cell phones, UV rays, and x-rays. Exposure to very high levels of radiation can result in long-term health effects such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, and exposure to low levels of radiation is a minor contribution to overall cancer risk. The guiding principle for radiation safety is ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable). This principle refers to the time spent near a radiation source, the distance from the source, and the possibility of shielding from the source. Healthcare professionals need to be familiar with the guidelines for safe radiology procedures and how to best protect from radiation for themselves and their patients in the healthcare field.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the biological effects of radiation exposure
2. Discuss practical limits allowed for exposure
3. Develop familiarity with methods of radiation detection and protection
