Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people – which primarily includes members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities – face numerous health and healthcare disparities. They are at higher risk of certain conditions, have less access to health care, and have worse health outcomes. These disparities are seen in the areas of behavioral health, physical health, and access to care. Healthcare professionals need to learn how to best care for patients in the LGBTQ+ community.
Does your medical staff need an update on healthcare for the LGBTQ+ population? Here are some of the learning objectives that our faculty can cover in a 1-hour CME lecture:
- Explain terms related to LGBTQ+ healthcare such as gender identity, Suffield orientation, transgender, nonbinary, gender expression, pansexual, etc.
- Provide healthcare encounters for LGBTQ+ patients that create an open, supportive environment to enhance communication and provide appropriate care
- Describe how self-harming behavior may be an issue for an LFBTQ+ patient, and effectively identify and respond to signs of self-injury
- Explain medical and surgical treatment that transgender patients may receive to affirm their gender identity
