Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is the chronic use of opioids that causes clinically significant distress or impairment. OUD affects over 2.1 million Americans, and approximately 75,000 people in the United States died from opioid overdose in 2021. OUD is a long-term disease with treatment options that decrease mortality; however there are many barriers for patients to access these treatments. The opioid epidemic has rapidly outpaced provider and clinician knowledge of OUD and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). The surge in OUD has required that ALL providers, not just addiction medicine specialists, engage in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of OUD.
Does your medical staff need an update on the diagnosis and treatment of opioid use disorder? Here are some of the learning objectives that our faculty can cover in a 1-hour CME lecture:
- Describe the epidemiology of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)
- Describe the importance of Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) for OUD and apply these treatment principles to OUD patient cases
- Identify strategies to improve OUD treatment adherence
