TRENDING MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPIC: UPDATE ON HEARING HEALTH
May is Better Hearing and Speech Month! Hearing loss is the third leading chronic medical
condition in the United States, with 1 in 3 older adults having some hearing loss. Hearing loss
can be caused by noise, aging, disease, or heredity and is associated with cognitive
decline. Studies have shown that older adults with hearing loss have a greater chance of
developing dementia than normal hearing, so treating hearing loss is important for cognitive
health. Managing hearing loss can be challenging and complicated, and healthcare
professionals need to know their role in evaluating and managing these patients.
